When Old Becomes New

Just because a piece of furniture is old, does not mean it is garbage. Old furniture often needs a little TLC to become a character piece of any room.

When I design a room, I love to infuse old pieces of furniture amongst new contemporary ones. Adding an old piece to any room design instantly creates warmth and a homey feel.

There are 3 Reasons I absolutely love to include old repurposed furniture into every design.

Used Furniture is Cheaper

  • More often than not people think of used furniture as old, antiquated, or just ugly. Many can’t visualize an old piece of furniture in an updated contemporary space; because of this you it is easy to find discarded gems for very little money - such as on kijiji, used furniture stores, or simply on the side of the rode for FREE. This beats buying all new furniture for your remodel, and it saves quite a bit of money.
I was inspired by the frame of these dining room chairs. Since they were used, we were able to get them at a great deal.

Used Furniture is Solidly Built

  • Today, furniture is often made overseas at a lower cost to ensure that retailers are able to sell it at bargain prices and still make profits. The quality of new furniture has been affected by the vast desire to sell items at the lowest price possible; unless you are choosing to have a custom piece of furniture made. Gone are the days when people bought furniture expecting them to last an actual lifetime, and because of this quantity over quality mindset, brand new furniture just becomes less reliable in the long term. I often advise my clients to invest in or reuse old furniture, because it will last a lifetime, and can be reupholstered or refreshed without compromise.
Sometimes its difficult to part ways with a treasured old piece of furniture with family history. This beautiful old solid pine chest was sitting in our client's old spare room. Since it had sat for long, it needs a little more attention and care to get it back to functioning order.

We encouraged our clients to not give up on their treasure furniture piece. We fixed the drawers so they would slide open without struggle, painted it white, added glass knobs, and removed the small mirror attached. It is back working order and moved into the 21st century.

Repurposing old Furniture makes it one-of-a-kind!

  • If you acquire a used, solidly built piece of furniture, you can confidently breathe new life into it by recovering, repainting, or reupholstering without fear of it affecting its structural stability. Repurposing old furniture adds character to any space, making it a one of a kind room. People are normally hesitant when I suggest keeping an old piece of furniture they already own, but when I help them visualize, and turn that into a beautiful one of a kind piece, the result is usually the same, the client falls in love with the same piece of furniture all over again!
Certain transformations just make you say wow every time. This is one of my all time favourites. Our client had this chair sitting in the corner of their living room in a faded red velvet, further dating the room.

When we recovered the chair in a fun green animal print and placed it in the guest bedroom, it added some fun to an otherwise serious space. This chair is perfect for guests to sit down and relax or read.

I absolutely love incorporating used furniture into my designs to add warmth and a timeless touch in any room. Try not to dismiss an old piece of furniture, because if you are willing to give it a little TLC, it can be the cherry on top of cake in your perfect new space.
